Decolonizing Mindsets: Embracing Culture as a First Generation College Student (Malloy 202)
A workshop by Yvette Machado-Tuinier (Undergraduate Student, University of Nevada, Las Vegas)
About this Workshop
Explore the power of decolonizing our mindsets on the journey of navigating higher education as a First-Gen College Student.
Our session highlights the culture of being First-Gen, and how our roots can help us curate our College experience. Our goal is to shed light on the challenges faced by First Generation College Students, who often find themselves caught between expectations, and uncertainties–pulled between embracing and navigating imposter syndrome.
The essence of our workshop is to challenge the notion that success is "self-made", and inspire First-Gen students to take pride in being Community-Made.
We will delve into the importance of embracing one's cultural heritage and identity as a source of strength and resilience on this educational journey.
