Exploring Class Workshop: Intersection of Class and First-Gen Identity (Malloy 202)

A workshop by Jessica Angeles , Adeola Akinyemi and Emily Kwen

About this Workshop

Exploring Class: Intersection of Class and First-Gen Identity provides a collaborative space to broaden the conversation about how class and the first gen identity intersect. Within higher education, cross class interactions influence the experiences of first gens, many of whom often share similar class backgrounds and stories. However, space for conversations about the connection between class and first gen identity, as well as for participants to explore their own class identity through the analysis of their experiences are not emphasized enough.

This interactive and conversational workshop is rooted in Class Action’s mission to engage people of all backgrounds in reflections about class identity and experience. During this session, participants will draw on their personal experiences with class dynamics, develop a collective understanding of class and class indicators, and distinguish the connection between the first gen identity and class. In order for schools and communities to better support their first gen students, it is important to also have conversations focused on class. This session is only the start to these conversations as we build awareness of class and classism's role in our day-to-day interactions."
