About this speaker
Being a First Gen means that her life is completely in no other hand than her own. The first thing she learned about college was the prestige. She knew that that was the dream for first gens and soon became a dream for herself. However, getting to the dream was harder than learning how to cook. She’s been cooking since the age of seven, nothing more than packing lunch and making breakfast. Cooking was something she had to do when she was young because her parents went to work early, and as she got older she learned how to cook dinner because her parents would come home late. Cooking was her experience with being a first gen. She knew she was hungry and had to look for something to eat but it was only when she learned to cook she could eat. Similarly, she knew she had to go to a good college because she was told that would make her succeed in life but she had no idea how to get there until she began figuring it out herself. Being a first gen she felt confused when coming up with a list of colleges she wanted to go to, what financial aid is, deadlines, personal statements. While navigating the list of what to do, she had to execute it and that would prove tough as the only one reading her application was grammarly. She did eventually figure it out and was prideful. However she is still learning to this day. Being a first gen means that she is confused and upset that there were not many resources viable to help her but also elated to have known that she is a first gen and that she did make it to college where she won’t hesitate to tell people about her identity.
