Serenity Truth

The Picture on Our Fridge is Our Identity (Olin 101)

A workshop by Serenity Truth (Undergraduate Student, Wellesley College)

About this Workshop

This session will allow participants to engage with other first gens and to explore their identity as a first gen through photography and storytelling. Attendees should attend my session because they will have a chance to be introspective and creative. For the first part of the session I will share a quote: “The eyes cannot see what the mind doesn’t know”- D.H Lawrence. This quote blends nicely to the second part of the session where attendees turn to the person next to them, trade phones and take a picture of one another. After taking a picture, the attendees will write on a piece of paper to describe what it was like being a first gen from home life, college applications, college, friends, jobs, etc. Those who are comfortable can share what they thought of the quote, picture taking process, or what they wrote on their paper. This session will connect what we all know that first gens exist but when there are no stories to the picture or vice versa the experiences of first gens will be pushed to the side.
